Now May Be the Best Time to Go Back to School

Rachel Hanson, Contributing Writer

Updated: 3/15/2010

In many sectors in America, work is lagging. Whether you work in building construction, retail, or you even the financial industry, many sectors have slowed down immensely. Whether you work for yourself or you work for a company who is giving you fewer hours because of reduced need for workers, many employees are finding their working time (and therefore their paychecks) to be diminishing. If this is the case for you, it might be that the most valuable thing you can do with your time is go back to school.

Going back to school to get a college education, or getting a more advanced degree than the one you already hold, can not only be a good way to spend your time, but it will also, eventually, make your salary go up again.

People with a college degree make significantly more than people with a high school diploma. The jump in salary between those with a bachelor’s and those with a master’s is smaller than the jump between college degree and high school diploma…but still there is a difference. In many sectors, the salary offered to educated individuals is much higher. Taking only salary into consideration, going back to school for a college degree seems like a win-win situation.

Degrees to Earn

Online education is making it much easier for many people to get a college degree. Online degrees are becoming more and more popular and there are more and more universities offering courses and entire degree programs online. If you already know the degree you’d like to pursue, take a look at how many universities are offering this subject as an online degree; the sheer volume of the options might shock you! If you don’t have a particular degree in mind, take a moment to read about the most common online degrees, what they qualify one to do, and if you’re interested in money, the salary range for those who hold the same degree.

Getting a degree, whether from an online university or a traditional university will not only raise your salary, it will also make you more competitive in the work world. If you do not think you’ll be staying at your current job for the rest of your life, do consider how much a college degree can improve your resume.

Giving your resume over to potential employers will be a different story with a college degree added in addition to a high school diploma. If you already have a college degree, don’t underestimate the power of adding a master’s degree to your resume. As more and more people get bachelor’s degrees, in many fields it’s the resumes with a master’s degree already on it that stand out in a large stack of resumes.

Many degrees lead to substantially higher salaries, more responsibilities each day, and a greater sense of employee satisfaction. If you’re toying with the idea of going back to school, do consider the possibilities. Since getting an online degree does not involve relocating to a college campus, starting with only one or two online courses will not disrupt your life too much.Even if you don’t complete an entire degree, the courses you’ve completed will also look good on your resume.

There is no better time than now to take control of your future and potential earnings.
